The Indonesian government is hoping that the current visit by Solomon
Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo will strengthen ties between
the two island nations, a presidential staffer said on Monday.
Lilo, who arrived in Indonesia on Sunday, is the first Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands to visit Indonesia. He is expected to meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Bogor Palace today, according to Teuku Faizasyah, a presidential spokesperson for foreign affairs.
“[We] hope that the visit by Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo will be able to strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and the Solomon Islands. The visit also reflects the determination of the two nations to build their friendship based on the respect of their respective sovereignty,” Faizasyah said.
He added that dealings between the Solomon Islands and Indonesia have been productive over the last five years.
“Our trade relations even registered an average annual increase of 17.28 percent,” he said.
Bilateral trade volume was at $15.88 million in 2012, with Indonesia posting a $9.1 million surplus.
“The Solomon Islands also works with Indonesia in the fields of energy, fishing, development, media and culture,” Faizasyah said.
He said that the two leaders would also discuss economic cooperation and development programs in the Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asian regions.
Darcy will end his visit on Wednesday.
